While his early music career kept him very busy, Dean slowly began writing his own original songs. As he prepared for his first studio album project, local musician extraordinaire Ken Gehret, coupled with the recording genius of the late Pete Helffrich, combined with Dean to produce a powerful team of creative talent.

In December 1994, production of Dean’s Origin of the Wind album was completed and subsequently published by Dean Smith Music. While this work had limited college radio airplay in the states, it had extensive radio support overseas. His second album, The Dusting was completed in 1999, further defining his creative talents while enhancing the acoustic Martin guitar sound he was starting to be noted for. The Dusting has had radio airplay from Belgium to New Zealand overseas, and from Alaska to Florida to Maine in the continental U.S. There is no doubt his songwriting skills have been honed to a professional level.
